I am not seeing effects sent to me

After upgrading to ios 10 other iphone users who have upgraded are trying to send me messages with the new effects. I am not able to see what they are sending me, but they can see what I'm sending them. I have imessage turned on, so that's not an issue. Any suggestions?

iPhone 6s Plus, iOS 10

Ok I'm answering my own question because I can't figure out a way to delete it! So for anyone who might need an answer to this like I did, try resetting imessage, relaunching the messages app, and restarting the phone if those do not work 🙂

Turn Reduce Motion off in Settings > General> Accessibility > Reduce Motion.
